Santa Cruz, the largest city within the lowlands, is located here, as are the majority of Bolivia's petroleum and all-natural gas reserves. The southeastern part of the lowlands is part of the Gran Chaco. Pretty much rainless for 9 months with the 12 months, this spot gets flooded to the 3 months of hefty rains. The extreme variation in rainfall supports more only thorny scrub vegetation and cattle grazing, although the latest discoveries of purely natural fuel and petroleum near the foothills from the Andes have attracted some settlers to the location.
